Motorcycle Accidents

As a result of high gas prices and poor gas mileage by most vehicles, more and more people are using motorcycles for transportation. Subsequently, there has been a steady increase in the number of motorcycle accidents. The number of motorcycles on the road is expected to continue to increase, which will mean the potential for even more accidents.

Statistics from 2008 show that there were over 7.1 million motorcycles registered and in use on the road. In 2009, over 1 million motorcycles were registered and put on the roads, bringing the number of motorcycles in use to over 8.1 million.

There were 5,290 deaths related to motorcycle accidents reported in 2008. This number could have been reduced by about 1,000 had the motorcyclists worn helmets. Further statistical information shows that the number of serious accidents involving a motorcycle have steadily increased over the past ten years. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, a motorcyclist is thirty-seven times more likely to be injured operating a motorcycle than the driver of an automobile. It was also reported that a motorcycle operator is nine times more likely to be injured while operating a motorcycle than while operating an automobile.

Other accident statistics show that fourteen percent of all motor vehicle deaths involved at least one motorcycle. The number of motorcycle accidents that caused serious injury or property damage was about 114,000 in 2008.

When operating a motorcycle, it is always important to follow safety procedures. Wear protective gear and helmets that were developed to help reduce injuries. Always be aware of your surroundings when operating the motorcycle. Operating a motorcycle offers less protection than operating an automobile. Always obey speed limits.

If involved in an accident, first and foremost, call 911. Even if the motorcyclist does not seem to be seriously injured, they may still have injuries that are not currently evident. Motorcyclists do not have the protection of air bags and seat belts.

The next step is to contact the insurance company to start the process of filing a claim for damages to the motorcycle, medical claims and property damage claims. The last step that should be made is to contact a personal injury lawyer.

Most lawyers offer a free consultation. During this consultation, they will collect information about the accident. The lawyer will determine if there is a need to take further steps and legal action.
